Catholic Church mourns Bishop Bimenyimana

Bishop Jean Damascene Bimenyimana of Cyangugu Diocese succumbed to cancer at the age of 64, after a hospital in Kenya discharged him on Sunday March 11, 2018. According to Bishop Philippe Rukamba, the head of the Episcopal Conference of Catholic Bishops of Rwanda, Bishop Bimenyimana was discharged from Nairobi after doctors told him they couldn’t help him anymore.

Bishop Jean Damascene Bimenyimana of Cyangugu Diocese succumbed to cancer at the age of 64, after a hospital in Kenya discharged him on Sunday March 11, 2018.

According to Bishop Philippe Rukamba, the head of the Episcopal Conference of Catholic Bishops of Rwanda, Bishop Bimenyimana was discharged from Nairobi after doctors told him they couldn’t help him anymore.

"The doctors discharged him and he returned on Sunday because they couldn’t help anymore. He was taken to Rwanda Military Hospital immediately he landed in Kigali where he died a few hours later,” said Bishop Rukamba.

Bishop Rukamba says his burial date is yet to be established.

Late Bishop Bimenyimana was ordained priest in 1980 and was attached to Nyundo Parish in Rubavu District.

In January 1997, at the age of 44, he was appointed Bishop of Cyangugu Diocese which covers a big part of the Western Province.
