Rwandans are today, together with the rest of the world, celebrating Christmas. A day that is marked with all sorts of festivities, as we join our families and friends, to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

City residents have travelled to the countryside to enjoy the day with their extended families. The euphoria is well deserved as it is not always that we get the time off to join and be with our loved ones,but caution has to be taken.

First, always the celebrations come with excitement, which is not bad in itself but the end result of overdoing it is. It is through this excitement that in most cases goes with consuming more alcohol than one can handle which is not recommended, especially for those who will be driving.

Alcohol and driving don’t mix! We should be cautious and cooperate with our police officers who, unlike the rest of us who will be in celebration mood, they will be on highways trying to minimise the dangers that might come with this excitement.

Let us celebrate responsibly and help the officers help us because at the end of the day, it is us they are working for. It is our lives they are saving. It’s out of the excitement and over consumption of alcoholic drinks that more highway accidents take place. We should avoid this.

We should also avoid overspending during this festive season especially looking at the financial demands that come with the month of January.

It is during the month of January, immediately after the festivities that children go back to school and with all of the requirements at the beginning of the school year, we have to plan for the tomorrow.

So let us enjoy the day while mindful of the future. Merry Christmas!
