As part of celebrations to mark International Women’s Day, a cross section of women living in Kigali met at Repub Lounge in Kimihurura on Thursday for a dinner gala to celebrate the annual day.
In its fifth year, the International Women’s Day dinner attracted women from different walks of life and from different countries including Rwanda, Somalia, Netherlands, Burundi, Uganda, UK, Jordan, USA and South Africa.
The over 20 women who turned up for the event organised by Events Horizon Ltd, were treated to good food, wine, games, interactive sessions and live Jazz Band entertainment by Herbert Rock at the Repub Lounge in Kimihurura, Kigali.
Events Horizon has for the past five years organised events for International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day.
Games were gender related and informative. One of the games was to find out the number of women heads of state over the past two decades.
"It is sad to know that in the past decade or two; only 13 women have made it to the level of head of state. That explains why the push for progress in gender parity campaign is on and will continue to go on,” said Eva Gara, the co-organiser of the women’s day dinner.
"If we as Women are to get our rightful place in society we need more than ever to stand up and claim it,” she added.
She noted that the event aims at bringing women together to celebrate their femininity, and power.
"We bring together different women to know each other and empower one another and the number of women attending the event has since doubled even though we did not bring in all the women that we wanted to attend for better planning,” she said.
Events Horizon will in May organise a charity event ahead of Mother’s day to support children living with disabilities. It is founded and co-owned by Zuki Ngxiki and Eva Gara.
International Women’s Day was celebrated under the theme "The Involvement of Men and Boys in Achieving Gender Equality.”
The day has been observed for over 100 years. In his message on International Women’s Day, President Paul Kagame said that women are a cornerstone of prosperity for society as a whole.
"Even in situations of conflict, they are in a position to make unique contributions to peace and stability,” he said.
