Nkurunziza Benie is among the senior six students from different high schools around the country who, on 6th March 2018, attended the Career Day at KIM University’s Auditorium.

Awaiting to join the University, the 18 year old is excited about the future of her career. Though she wants to be a journalist, Nkurunziza believes that there are many careers that she can pursue but just lacks someone to point her in the right direction. So when she  got wind of an impending career guidance activity, she excitedly jumped ship. 

"I learned about the event through my WhatsApp group and I knew it’s something I really needed before joining University in September 2018. I have to choose well and I need career guidance professionals to point me in the right direction,” says Nkuruzniza. 

Nkurunziza is among the students awaiting enrollment into universities that attended the Tuesday event, the third of its kind orgarnised by KIM University where management partners with staff from independent professional bodies to offer their guidance among students that intend to opt for the different careers.

The aim of Career Day is to provide a platform for students and alumni, to access appropriate information that will enable them make informed career choices including; knowledge needed for a certain career path, weighing available options and  providing mutually beneficial links between students and employers.

During the event, students met professionals from different companies and organizations, professional bodies such as ICPAR , the Commissioner General of RRA and the Chairman Board of Directors of KIM University that inspired them about their career development.

While addressing the students, Richard Tusabe the Commissioner General of Rwanda Revenue Authority, called upon students not to pick on easy courses yet they are capable of doing other better courses that are more competitive on the labour market.

"I know that many of you prefer easy courses but let me tell you that it is not the best decision. Do a course that will assure you a job in the labour market. Choice is very important and what you choose to do will determine your success in future” said Tusabe .

Kalisa Sunday another professional from ICPAR called upon students to take advantage of the free career guidance that is being offered them and to use it to make better choices for their future.

"There are many benefits of career counseling to consider. It’s easy to feel confused when it comes to what type of career path to choose. Having a professional advisor to assist with deciding what strengths and talents can be developed into a solid career is an advantage for you and something you should be proud of” said Kalisa. During the event, Peter Rutaremara the Chairman Board of Directors  of KIM University introduced its academic programs that blended with matching professional courses.

He emphasized that labor market and employers now require both the job holders and job seekers to hold both academic and professional qualifications.

"At KIM University, we are committed to nurturing young people on professionals, with entrepreneurship skills by offering the best students free courses. The world needs professional people with skills, knowledge and experience to face challenges and achieve success. I encourage all those who feel that they want to be professional accountants to join us here for better careers,” Rutaremara said.

According to Rutaremara, KIMU offers an opportunity for a double qualification combining an honors degree with a professional course.

"The double qualification makes our graduates more competitive in the labour market. Those that have passed through our University after combining the two have got jobs faster and are enjoying good careers’ growth and the associated emoluments and other fringe benefits,” he explained.

By the time the event ended, students from the many respective high schools had been inspired by the motivational speeches on career guidance that were delivered by invited professionals and many left with a changed opinion on what they should be practicing in the future.

KIM University is a higher learning institution that is accredited by the Government of Rwanda to offer undergraduate and post graduate academic programs.
