Ernest Kwizera’s strike on the 24th minute proved decisive as Rwanda’s U-20 team, the Junior Wasps pulled off a 1-0 win over ES Beni-Khalled to continue their impressive run in their build-up for next month’s African Youth Championships in Kigali.
The win was Rwanda’s second after last week’s 1-0 win over Tunisia’s Premier league side La Marsa.
Ferwafa’s Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa believes that the result boosted the team’s confidence as they prepare for tougher games ahead.
Rwanda’s next game is on Saturday when they take on Club Bizertin. Other clashes lined up for the junior wasps include games against 1991 African Club Champions ‘Club Africain’, and Tunisia’s top sides; Esperance and Etoile du Sahel.
Esperance are now six-points clear at the top of the Tunisian first division football championship.
After their one-month stint in Tunisia, the youngsters will head to Egypt where they will continue gauging themselves with two trial games against Egypt’s U-20 side.
The team will then jet back on January 11 shortly after which Obradovic Tomislav will name his final squad (18 players).
The African Youth Championships scheduled to run from January 18-February 1, 2009 will attract eight teams. Rwanda is drawn in Group A alongside Mali, Cameroon and Ghana while Group B is made up of Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Egypt.
The top four sides in the championship will earn automatic slots at the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt. However, should Egypt reach the last four in Rwanda, then the 5th placed team automatically qualifies for the World Cup.
Rwanda opens her campaign on January 18 against Mali at Amahoro stadium.
