The Street Dance competition came to an end last weekend and Finest Dance Crew emerged winners at the tournament’s grand finale held at Nengo Ground in Rubavu on Saturday.

The Kimisagara-based dance talent beat ‘The Snipers Dance Crew’ and ‘The Monsters’, who came in first and second place respectively.

Under the theme ‘Dance in your style but remember your life is in your hands’, the competition that kicked off January 13 in Kayonza District in the Eastern Province, aimed at recognising, developing and promoting dance talent in the country, with focus on modern and African dance techniques.

The competition was organised by Vast Pro, a local events company in partnership with the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Rwanda.

Hosted by radio personality Phil Peter, the competition was also a platform used to sensitise the youth on HIV prevention, sexual reproductive health, and voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC).

Other dance crews included Hope Dance Crew from the Western Province, KTY Crew from Kimisagara, Wasafi Dance crew from the Southern Province, and YCEG Crew from the Eastern Province.

The Finest Dance Crew beat the rest with their excellent dance skills that earned them many supporters. They walked away with a cash prize of Rwf 1m. ‘The Snipers’ and ‘The Monsters’ won Rwf 300, 000 and Rwf 200, 000 respectively while the rest were given Rwf 100 000 per person.

Emmanuel Murenzi, the competition coordinator, told The New Times that they will continue searching for great dancers and help them build and shape their future in dance.

"This is just the beginning. We are planning to continue organising such competitions and hopefully it will be annual so that the youth can build their talent and make money from it,” he said.

Different key anti- HIV/AIDS messages from AHF officials were given to the young folks who attended the show. They were asked to develop their talent but also protect themselves from HIV/ AIDS which can ruin their career.
