Six men’s national volleyball league teams will feature in the inaugural Gisagara pre-season tournament, which is scheduled for this weekend at Gisagara Gymnasium in Gisagara district, Southern Province.
According to the Gisagara Volleyball Club president Francois Xavier Mfashingabo, the top six teams include; Rwanda Energy Group (REG), APR, University of Tourism Technology and Business Studies (UTB), Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC), IPRC-South and hosts Gisagara.
The pre-season tournament is part of the teams’ preparations ahead of the national league season scheduled to start on February 13.
"Our aim is to continue to develop volleyball through organizing such competitions more often. We want to organize the pre-season tournament every year,” Mfashingabo said.
Preliminary round matches and semi-finals will be played on Saturday and the final and third place game will be on Sunday. On the top of the trophy, the winner will earn Rwf200,000, second place will receive Rwf100,000 while third-placed team will get Rwf50,000.
Mfashingabo noted that Gisagara will use the occasion to show their fans the league trophy they won last season.
Volleyball league debutants Gisagara VC upset Kirehe VC 3-1 in Game 2 of the league playoff finals played to win title.
Both Gisagara and Rwanda Revenue Authority, who won the women’s league title, will represent Rwanda at this year’s CAVB Club Championships.
