Remera police station is holding a 26-year-old demobilized soldier who swindled money from local residents promising to enrol them in UN Missions in Sudan.

Eugene Nyirimana reportedly mobilized residents asking for Rwf 30, 000 claiming that he had the capacity to put them on lists of those who qualify for the UN Missions in Khartoum and Darfur in Sudan.

"They believed me, I managed to convince them I was working in the defence ministry,” the man confessed.

Nyirimana who is also a student at Apade High School in Kicukiro District, told The New Times that he had accumulated over Rwf300,000 that he said would assist him in his school requirements next year.

The conman had piles of photocopies of identity cards, copies of high school certificates and passports of his victims. One of the victims who did not want her identity to be revealed, said that was told by a third party that there was a man enrolling people for Darfur and Khartoum with a pre-condition of paying Rwf 30.000.

"I was given his phone number and I called him, he told me to find him at the Ministry of Defence offices. I was received nicely but was shockingly told that the man was an impostor,” she said.

"I accept the crime, and I plead for mercy,” Nyirimana said.

Police spokesperson Willy Marcel Higiro warned the public that such impostors will not be tolerated. He called on them to stay alert for such impostors who promise them quick services.

"We are warning the public not to be influenced by lack of employment as an excuse to do things illegally,” Higiro warned.
