The national cycling team riders have started training ahead of the upcoming 2018 African Continental Road Championships that will be held from February 13-18.

Last year, Rwanda was awarded the rights to host this year’s edition, and according to Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), preparations are progressing well.

It will be the second time for Rwanda to stage Africa’s most prestigious cycling event, but for the first time in eight years since 2010.

FERWACY say that their experience in organizing high-level competitions such as Tour du Rwanda, which has earned great success over the years and is now one of the major cycling events in Africa, gives them confidence about doing the same with the African Continental Road Championships.

According to federation officials, the Continental Championships will start with team managers’ meeting before the opening ceremony.

Day two, Feb. 14, it will be the Team Time Trial (Men Juniors, Women Juniors, Women Elites, Men U23 + Elites) and then on Feb. 15, it will be Individual Time Trial event (Men Juniors, Women Juniors, Men U23 +Elites)

February 16, will be rest day for the cyclists but it’s the day on which the African Cycling Confederation (CAC) will hold its General Assembly. The main road races + circuit will begin on Feb. 17 for the Men Juniors, Women Juniors and Women Elites.

Meanwhile, on Feb. 18, which will be final day for the competition, it will be the road race + circuit for Men Elite and Men U23.

Last year’s African Continental Road Championships took place in Luxor, Egypt and it was won by South African Willie Smit in the Men Elite category.
