Rwanda’s middle-distance runner Salome Nyirarukundo  and James Sugira won medals in the women and men categories respectively at the 28th edition of Silvesterlauf- a New Year’s Eve race held in the Southwestern German city of Trier on Sunday.

Nyirarukundo finished second in the women’s race after using a total of 15 minutes and 50 seconds behind Germany born Klosterhalfen Konstanze, 20 who won a Gold medal after clocking 15:33’2’ while Melat Yisak Kejeta from Ethiopia clocked 15: 52’ 4.’’

In the 10km men’s category, James Sugira finished in second place with 23:11;3 behind the winner from Morocco Zouhair Talbi while Kenyan Alfred Cherop came in third place.

From Germany, Martin Sperlich (Friedrichshafen) came in fifth place and Wattenscheider Hendrik Pfeiffer in sixth.

The race attracts the best runners in Germany, international athletes, and senior citizens to celebrate the conclusion of the year.

Over 1600 people from different countries participated; it included the women competition (5km), men competition (10km), Women run for fun (5km), men run for fun (8km) and 1km competition for kids.

Rwanda’s James Sugira and Salome Nyirarukundo competed in10km and 5km category respectively.
