Following all the fun festivities on December 31, there’s nothing better than relaxing and enjoying a great film on January 1. However, the concept of a New Year’s Movie isn’t as solid as a Christmas one. But there are certain classics that evoke feelings of hope, spontaneity and cheer of a brand new year. Here are some of the movies to watch around New Year’s;

Sex and the City: The Movie

While Sex and the City takes place over the course of a year, its standout sequence is the New Year’s Eve montage that shows Carrie running through the snowy streets of New York (in heels, obviously) to get to her buddy Miranda while Mairi Campbell’s "Auld Lang Syne” plays in the background. I’m not crying.

Holiday Inn

If you like to spend your New Years’ in with champagne and a movie musical, 1946’s Holiday Inn is the way to go. It has peak Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby dancing their way through a year’s worth of holidays (including New Year’s), and all the old Hollywood charm you could want.Full disclosure, most versions of Holiday Inn have cut an originally super racist musical number about Lincoln’s birthday but if you have an old copy it may still be in there. It’s bad. Be prepared.

When Harry Met Sally

Watching two people fall in love over the course of several years is always gratifying, but Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal perfected the process in When Harry Met Sally. Their climactic New Year’s kiss is one of the all-time most romantic, slow-burn smooches of all time. Treat yourself to watching it while the ball drops.

Bridget Jones’ Diary

Another iconic New Year’s smooch happens in Bridget Jones’s Diary, the quintessential rom-com for the perpetually single woman.

Ocean’s 11

The original Ocean’s 11 stars Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Dean Martin as part of the OG Ocean crew led by a pre-Clooney Danny Ocean. Their casino heist takes place on New Year’s Eve, with an explosive twist punctuating the moment the clock strikes 12.

RENT

Musical fans everywhere will recognize RENT as a favourite. Its first act takes place in the time between Christmas Eve and New Year’s and genuinely captures the hope that a new year might bring to anyone.

Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer is a bizarre, post-apocalyptic adventure that takes place entirely on a train, but as weird as the premise sounds, it works. There’s something about bearded Chris Evans, gorgeous sets, plot twists, and the oddest New Year’s celebration ever filmed that make the movie completely unforgettable.

An Affair to Remember

You can thank Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant for shaping your (possibly unrealistic) perception of the perfect New Year’s kiss. For an epic movie marathon, throw in Sleepless in Seattle next.

The Godfather Part II

If mafia movies are more your style, here’s an offer you can’t refuse on New Year’s Day. Instead of a loving peck at midnight, Al Pacino’s character gives the brother who betrayed him the "kiss of death.”

The Poseidon Adventure

A shipwreck on New Year’s Eve sends passengers into survival mode. Make a day of it with the 1979 sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, as well as the 2006 remake Poseidon.

New Year’s Eve

Taking cues from Love Actually, this simple flick features interconnected arcs about love—a perfectly pleasant (and aptly titled) picture for New Year’s.
