RULINDO - The First lady Mrs Jeanette Kagame, yesterday donated on behalf of Unity Club, a Friesian cow and its calf including a variety of foodstuffs to 38 orphans in Rulindo, Northern Province.

The beneficiaries were the orphans from the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Orphanage, as a Christmas gift made by the Unity Club an organization that brings together current and former leaders of the country.

The First Lady is the Chairperson of Unity Club. The foodstuffs donated included 500 kg’s of Rice, 500kg’s of Beans, 200kg’s of Sugar and 100 Kg’s of Millet flour.

Addressing local, district, provincial leaders and members of Unity Club present, Mrs Kagame called upon Rwandan families to treat orphans with care as their own children.

"Each Rwandan family should be able to maintain children to grow up as healthy and educated citizens because they are the pillar on which our future rests on,” said the First Lady.

She also called upon families to be at the forefront in the struggle of eradicating the spread of HIV/AIDS through regular tests of the virus and to observe family planning  by having a minimum number of children that they support.

The First lady was flanked by Ministers Joseph Habineza of Sports and Culture and that of Gender and Family Promotion Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya including Youth Minister Protais Mitali.

In her speech, Mujawamariya urged residents to advocate for children’s rights and encouraged them to adopt orphans in their families.

"A child belongs to every family as enshrined in the Rwandan culture”, said Mujawamariya.
