We have a problem!

I hate to sound like a broken record, having just talked about the rampant sexual abuse and misconduct by people in positions of authority but I can’t help it.

I hate to sound like a broken record, having just talked about the rampant sexual abuse and misconduct by people in positions of authority but I can’t help it. How do you close your eyes and heart to the "Me Too” Movement?

Sadly, as many stories as are coming out, there are many more we will never hear about and the culprits will get away with it. All the more reason to laud those brave enough to speak out.

Every time I think that it probably couldn’t get worse, it does. In a way, I’m glad that we’re at least having these conversations. If even one molester or abuser is deterred, that’s a step in the right direction.

There’re some people who’re determined to carry on though. Question is why? Why is it so hard to treat others with respect and do whatever it takes not to cross the line? Why is it hard to just act professional? Looking at all the celebrities and famous people who have been exposed thus far, I couldn’t help asking what more they could possibly want. I thought having a successful career was enough. Why risk everything?

Many of these people are icons we idolize and you just can’t look at your role model the same knowing what he’s been up to this whole time. I dread the next disclosure because it could be an author whose books I love, an actor I grew up watching, a respected elder or relative, or God forbid, a Pastor at my Church.

I hate to generalize but I think we all know who the usual suspects are and many ladies reading this will probably have experienced the networking-turned-proposition scenario multiple times over the course of their careers.

You meet this brilliant man and are excited to share a business idea or work on a project. You stay up all night working on your proposal, presentations, vision boards and all that, only for him to turn up with anything but work on his mind. It’s okay to flirt, after all, that’s how many relationships start.

But there’s a time and place. You just can’t keep flirting with random people and if someone doesn’t flirt back or clearly tells you they’re not up for it, please respect their boundaries. Don’t send dirty texts or unsolicited nudes because first, it’s gross and secondly, they could end up anywhere and haunt you for the rest of your life. If you’re married or in a committed relationship, respect your spouse or partner and don’t cheat on them with all these other people.

It’s unsafe and unfair. For those in positions of authority, don’t fire someone simply because they turned you down or worse, force yourself on them. It’s wrong.

I did mention earlier that having discussions about improper conduct is a good start but seeing as this is turning out to be quite the epidemic, we need an antidote, and soon, to keep schools, workplaces and our communities safe from serial offenders and molesters.
