The Rwanda Meteorology Agency has issued a warning that eight districts are likely to experience strong winds over the next three days.
According to the agency, wind speeds ranging between eight and 12 meters per second are expected in several parts of Musanze, Burera, Gisagara, Huye, Nyanza, portions of Muhanga, northwestern Kamonyi, and northwestern Gatsibo.

In addition, moderate wind speeds ranging between four and six meters per second are forecasted for Kigali city, Kirehe, Kayonza, northern Nyagatare, and Gakenke, among others. The rest of the country is anticipated to encounter moderate to strong winds ranging between six and eight meters per second.
Rainfall predictions indicate varying amounts across different regions. The highest rainfall, ranging between 130 and 160 millimeters, is expected in areas near the Nyungwe National Park in Eastern Rusizi, western Nyaruguru, and southern Nyamagabe Districts.

Other districts such as Rubavu, Nyabihu, Musanze, Burera, among others, are likely to receive rainfall ranging between 80 and 100 millimeters. Meanwhile, the eastern parts of Nyagatare, Gatsibo, and Kayonza Districts are forecasted to experience the lowest amount of rainfall, ranging between 20 and 40 millimeters.

Lightning, Landslides cause havoc
Tragedies have struck several regions due to adverse weather conditions. On February 15, 2024, lightning struck six individuals who were praying on Buzinganjwiri hill in the Coko sector of Gakenke district. Regrettably, four of them succumbed to the lightning strike.
Furthermore, a landslide on Friday claimed the lives of a father and child in an unfortunate incident.
In response to these incidents, the National Police have urged the public to seek shelter during heavy rains to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency has advised the public to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall exceeding typical averages is expected throughout the country in February. Rainfall estimates range between 50 and 250 mm, with regions such as Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Nyaruguru, among others, bracing for the heaviest downpours.
Residents in affected areas are encouraged to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of challenging weather conditions.
