Nsengimana wins prologue as Tour du Rwanda starts

Team Rwanda rider Jean Bosco Nsengimana on Sunday won the prologue of this year’s Tour du Rwanda after using 3 minutes, 46 seconds, a new record in the 3.3km race.

Team Rwanda rider Jean Bosco Nsengimana on Sunday won the prologue of this year’s Tour du Rwanda after using 3 minutes, 46 seconds, a new record in the 3.3km race.

Nsengimama was the champion of the 7th edition of Tour du Rwanda in 2015.

Three Rwanda riders were among the top five of the race that covered the distance around Amahoro National Stadium.

Tour du Rwanda defending champion Valens Ndayisenga, also a Rwandan, finished in second place with 3 minutes and 48 seconds.South African national, De Bod Stefan who is riding for Dimension Data of South Africa came in third place while Joseph Areruya, another Rwandan, finished fourth. Nsengimana will have on the Yellow Jersey on Monday during the stage one that will start from Kacyiru to Huye District, a race that will 120.3km.

In total, the 2017 Tour du Rwanda will cover a  distance of 819 kilometres, and for the second consecutive year, will reach in all the four provinces of the country and Kigali.After becoming part of UCI Africa Tour in 2009, Ndayisenga made history by becoming the first Rwandan rider to win the race in 2014 and since then Rwandan riders have mastered the race.Nsengimana won the 2015 edition and Ndayisenga repeated the 2016 feat last year, making him the first rider ever to win the annual race more than once.This year’s edition has drawn a total of 75 cyclists grouped in 15 teams from across the world.
