KARONGI — About 160 needy families in Bwishyura Sector, Karongi district on Friday received goats donated by ‘COSA Ibyiringiro’, a project working under CARITAS Rwanda in the Western Province.

The beneficiaries included people living with HIV/Aids, child headed families and the poor elderly residents. Each family that received a goat is expected to pass on a kid to other poor families each time the goat has produced. This is geared at poverty reduction.

Claudine Uwimana, one of the beneficiaries living with HIV said the donation would help uplift their living conditions.

"With this goat received from CARITAS, my family has started focusing on development. We shall look after it properly and give to our neighbours who also face the same problem,” she said. She added that the goat will serve as source of manure to increase farm production.

"It will help me get manure to put in my plantations which will lead to increased production. I will even stock for the market because lack of manure has previously led to poor yields from my gardens,” she said.

Ethienne Kabahizi, COSA Ibyiringiro’s coordinator, told The New Times that the donation is part of their campaign to uplift the living conditions of vulnerable residents.

The project operates in Karongi and Ngororero districts benefiting about 1,100 residents in each district.
