Newly appointed Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Basketball Club head coach Cyrille Kalima has been tasked to win every domestic tournament in the forthcoming season, and also lead the club to FIBA Africa Zone Club title next year.
The former Patriots head coach was appointed recently by REG as head coach on a one-year contract subject to renewal. He replaced iconic Jean Bahufite and his coaching staff who parted company with the club at the end of the season despite leading the young club to a double in their uncharted waters.
According to the club team manager, Eric Bugingo, Kalima will be assisted by Burundian Patrick Ngwijuruvugo and the duo have already started their roles as the club have been training for the past three weeks for the preseason tournament slated to start on November 17.
The 2017/2018 league season will start on December 1.
"We parted company with our former coach (Bahufite) not because of any misunderstandings or poor results but because the club is aiming to improve to a much higher level and we were convinced that Kalima is the best candidate to lead the club,” said Bugingo in an interview with Times Sport.
"He has been tasked to win all domestic tournaments next season but our main target is the 2018 FIBA Africa Zone V title in which we shall be making our debut, our ambition is to be a club that can dominate on a regional level,” said Bugingo
The club was established before the start of 2016/17 season and went on to win the league title and Genocide memorial regional basketball tournament. For winning the league title, they will represent the country at next year’s Zone V championships along with former champions Patriots who won the playoffs title.
According to Bugingo, the club will next week announce new signings.
