The Nairobi Dialogue between the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) resumed on Thursday under the mediation of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa.

According to a statement by the Special envoy of the UN secretary general for the Great Lakes region Obasanjo the delegations engaged in both direct and proximity talks in an atmosphere of goodwill.

"I am pleased to note that they are making steady progress towards agreement on the ground rules for substantive discussions,”, said Obasanjo in the statement released on Friday.

The two Mediators also dispatched, on Thursday, a high-level delegation to meet with CNDP Chairman Laurent Nkunda in North Kivu, DR Congo, in order to clarify some of the outstanding issues that had slowed progress in efforts to find peace in eastern DR Congo.

According to the press statement, direct talks will resume on December 17.
