Twelve youth will battle for a dream record deal in the Rubavu Talent Detection competition finals on Saturday.
The initiative is a project by Easy and Possible, a non-profit local youth organisation, in partnership with Rwanda National Police and Rubavu District.
March this year, Easy and Possible held auditions across the Western Province, and over 300 hopefuls from 12 sectors auditioned for the musical talent search. However, only 12 of them made it to the finals to be held at Nkamira Refugee Camp.
The contest is aimed at preventing drug use among the youth in Rubavu district, by engaging them in different initiatives such as music. The search also aims at giving budding artistes a platform to expose their talent to the public through the competition.
François Sano Niyigena, the CEO of Easy and Possible, said the youth can use their talents in fighting drug abuse in their communities and across the country.
"We organised this contest to raise awareness among the youth in Rubavu to fight drug abuse using their talent, and to discover gifted singers in the Western Province,” Niyigena explained.
"The condition was to compose and stage songs containing anti-drug abuse messages that can make a crucial impact in changing people’s behavior on the issue,” he added.
Niyigena said that the youth across the country will get the chance to showcase their talent in future editions, as the organisers consider the talent detection a long-term project.
The winner will be signed under Easy and Possible management during his/her music production and promotion for a period of three years, while the first runner up will get an opportunity to record an audio and video album for a period of one year.
In addition to the record contracts, the winners will receive smart phones. The best song in the competition will be used by Rwanda National Police in its different community-based campaigns against drug abuse.
Headlining the event are Riderman, Jay Polly and Young Grace. The hip-hop trio will perform along with Theogene Uwiringiyimana, better known by his stage name Bosebabireba and Leonard Nsabimana, a popular artiste in Rubavu.
