John Peter Rwema, the executive director of the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda (AMIR), has been taken into police custody for alleged rape.

According to Western Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police Theobald Kanamugire, Rwema was arrested in Karongi on Tuesday after a 28-year old woman lodged a complaint that he had raped her in a hotel the night before.

"We arrested him to help with investigations. The victim has been examined at a local hospital and investigations are still ongoing, soon the law will take its course,” Kanamugire told The New Times Thursday.

Media reports suggest that the victim was heard screaming before going silent in a hotel room following a power blackout on Monday night.

The victim had allegedly traveled to Karongi from Kigali to attend a training organised by AMIR.

According to article 197 of the penal code, rape of a person aged 18 years or above attracts a term of imprisonment between five and seven years.
