The UN has outdone itself again. The recent report that was "leaked” to the media, five days before it was to be presented to the UN Security Council, is yet another reflection of how the 60-year old body damage controls.

After billions of dollars that were poured into the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) yielded nothing but scandal after scandal, the New York based body had to look for leverage to pull itself out of shark infested waters- pointing a finger in the wrong direction.

The age-old practice of sending "experts” who rely on hearsay evidence to base their reports on is still the norm with UN probes. Hearsay in itself is not the problem in this case because it can be a basis of where to begin investigations.

The problem arises when investigators sift through the trash can, find discarded candy wrappings and come to the quick conclusion as to who ate the candy.

The accusations that Rwanda is helping rebels fighting the DRC government, because some Congolese nationals have bank accounts in Rwanda, is simply absurd.

But to simply allude that a person – they refer to as a senior Congolese rebel – seen in the two kilometer no-man’s-land  between the DRC and Rwanda as evidence that he was coming from  Rwandan territory, therefore Rwanda is involved in the Congo. Makes one pity the people to whom the report is destined.

The UN Security Council should merit our sympathy if it agrees to be spoon fed half baked potatoes from apprentice chefs. But the real recipe for disaster will be all their making if they derail the current bilateral engagements – between the DRC and Rwanda – to disarm the FDLR rebels in the Congo, who for all these years, have been living under the very noses of, (and trading with) the UN peacekeepers.
