Patriotism should be every body’s responsibility

As we remember the day when gallant sons and daughters of this country took up arms to liberate their country from despotic rule, we should quietly meditate on what it should take for their efforts not to go in vain.

As we remember the day when gallant sons and daughters of this country took up arms to liberate their country from despotic rule, we should quietly meditate on what it should take for their efforts not to go in vain.

In the first instance, what is patriotism? To me, it’s the love of one’s birthplace, the place of childhood’s recollections and hopes, dreams and aspirations.

Every Rwandan regardless of status can contribute positively to its elevation from a country popularly known for Genocide to one of prosperity in every sector.

For example, promoting unity and reconciliation plus fighting Genocide ideology does not really need someone to have a lot of money on their bank accounts nor does it call for holding a big public office.

It’s all about learning and owning the fight for a developed Rwanda as we learn from the ruthless history that defines it. Hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were massacred in 1994 as the world stood and watched.

Likewise, the world will continue looking on if we do not lead the way in deciding on the future of our country. Patriotism is all about this, before you think of what your country has done for you, first ask of what you have done for the country.

With this, given its natural beauty and receptive people, Rwanda will truly be heaven on earth.
