Over 30 teams will compete in the third edition of beach volleyball tournament which will be held this weekend on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rubavu District, according to the organisers, Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB).
The tournament aims at promoting beach volleyball among the local players so that they can be able to contest favourably in future regional, continental and international competitions.
The 30 players include juniors, seniors and veterans in both male and female categories.
The winner in either category will receive a medal and Rwf200,000, while the first runner-ups will go home Rwf150,000 richer, with the third-placed teams getting Rwf100,000.
Some of the men’s teams that have confirmed participation include Freely Muyuku and Thierry Mugabo, Emmanuel Mugisha and Patrick Ruzindana, William Mudahemuka and Jules Niyibizi, Pierre Marshal Kwizera and Olivier Akimana, Uzziel Masizo Ndahimana and Olivier Rulinda, among others.
However, in senior women’s category, only one team of Charlotte Nzayisenga and Denise Mutatsimpundu had registered by press time although the organisers expected more to register Saturday morning. Nzayisenga and Mutatsimpundu are the defending champions.
University of Kibungo Volleyball Club duo of Olivier Ntagengwa and Patrick Kavalo won the first two editions but they will not play in this year’s tournament as they are on national duty with the national team.
Kagarama and Pascal Tuyishime took the veteran men’s title while Scholastic Nidukuze and Gertrude Kubwimana won the veteran women’s category.
