EASTERN PROVINCE

NGOMA district has received Rwf470 million from the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC) to rehabilitate selected projects in the district.

The money which was channelled through the Community Development Fund (CDF) is meant to rehabilitate Kibungo Market and a public car park.

August Tuyisabe, who is in charge of infrastructure in the district said that the rehabilitation is part of the government programme to give a new face to all trading centres country-wide.

Rwf400 m was allocated to rehabilitation of Kibungo Market while Rwf70 m will be used in rehabilitating the park.

Work on the park has already started while the rehabilitation of the market is scheduled to start early January 2009, according to Tuyisabe. Public taxis have been allocated to another place, just next to where the market will be moved when work starts.

The old park, Tuyisabe said, was built without a proper plan as it had no water trenches.

"The park could not operate in the rainy season as it could be filled with water,” he said, adding "Even other things like shops and restaurants there were substandard.” The park restaurants had no kitchen, they cooked from outside which Tuyisabe said posed a health threat.

According to the building plan, two storey houses will be built in the market place to accommodate shops and restaurants. Also to be built is an up-to standard slaughterhouse and some butcheries.

The Rwanda Animal Resource Development Authority (RARDA) closed all the butcheries and slaughterhouses in Kibungo town in October this year for health reasons.

Tuyisabe said the rehabilitation programme is scheduled to end early February 2009.
