APR women’s basketball club overcame Tanzania’s Don Bosco 84-74 in the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championships on Monday at Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala to up their ratio to 1:1 after Sunday’s defeat against Uganda’s KCCA. Rwanda is represented by two teams, Patriots in men’s category, and APR in the women’s.
APR dominated the game taking the opening quarter 23-17 and never looked back. Charles Mbazumutima’s team claimed the second quarter 22-18 to go into half-time break with a 45-35 lead.
Don Bosco returned for the second half stronger and narrowly won the third quarter 20-19 before APR upped their game to seal the fourth quarter; 20-19 win.
APR captain Charlotte Umugwaneza and forward Nicole Urwibutso both scored a game high 20 points, each, while Martine Umurerwa added another 15 points for the local league champions.
Orlin Londo and Irene Claud Luhanga topped Don Bosco’s scorers with 18 points each. Martha Kapwani contributed 14 points.
The Rwandan side returns to action Tuesday afternoon facing the defending champions, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), at 4pm.
Meanwhile, Patriots defeated Tanzania’s Savio 79-50 on Monday afternoon to register their second win of the tournament to become the first team to book a spot in the quarter-finals.
The game started well-balanced with both teams tying 19-all in the first quarter but Henry Mwinuke’s Patriots responded well to take the next three quarters, 20-3, 20-12 and 20-16 respectively.
Walter Chris Nkurunziza scored a game high 14 points; Olivier Shyaka added 13 points while Kami Kabange and Steven Havugintwari contributed 12 and 10 points, each. Brian Tune Muramba led Savio with 13 points, Juma Amini Mikosa and Sylvian Yunzu dropped 11 points each.
Patriots won their opening game over Hawasa City of Ethiopia 110-43 on Sunday, while Savio lost 93-46 to title holders, City Oilers, of Uganda whom Patriots face in the final group game, on Tuesday.
