Six-time league champions Rayon Sport squad that was traveling to play their league fixture against Kibuye Fc was involved in a road accident on Tuesday evening on the main road in Rugabano sector, Karongi district, Western Province.

The match that had been scheduled for last evening at Gatwaro stadium has now been shifted to a later date according to the local football govern body, Ferwafa.

Four players including club captain Bonaventure Hategikimana, Abdul Uwimana, Marcel Lomami and Joseph Kaniki were confirmed as the causalities according to club and police sources.

The cause of the accident has been attributed to bad weather not over speeding as it had been earlier on been  reported.

According to the District Police Commander, Superintendent Jean Marie Vianney Rurangirwa, the accident was not caused by over speeding but a mist denied the driver visibility thus sliding off the road.

"He was not over speeding but a heavy cloud which was caused by heavy downpour prevented him from seeing in front thus sliding off the road,” Rurangirwa said.

Rurangirwa further added that four players including Hategikimana sustained minor injures and were immediately rushed to Kibuye Government Hospital for treatment.

Ferwafa is yet to fix the date when Rayon Sport will play its fixture against Kibuye.

Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa said yesterday that they are still discussing on an appropriate date when Rayon Sport will play their away fixture to the Northern football giants.

In the national football action, after an unfortunate start to this year’s league, nine-time league champion APR continued their recovery on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Electrogaz to hold on their slim two points lead at the top of the league table with 23 points.

Danger man Kabange Twite broke his goal drought with a brace before Labama Bokota sealed the technicians’ fate on 89th minute. 

SC Kiyovu ‘s relegation woes continued after losing 1-0 to AS Kigali thanks to a Pappy Gasana lone strike.

Kiyovu is stuck at the bottom of the table with three points.

In Gisenyi, Jeunesse managed to post their first win of the season courtesy of Robert Nguga’s goal of the game against home-side Marines.

Elsewhere, Atraco leap-flogged Rayon Sport back into the second place thanks to a 2-0 win over Mukura last evening at Remera Grounds.

Ugandan import Hamis Kitagenda opened the scoring in the first minute of the game before Jean Lomami struck in the second half to deny Mukura any chance of a comeback.

Lomami’s goal against Southern Province giants took his goal tally to 10 making the Amavubi Star the season’s top scorer.

The win took Atraco back into second place with 21 points, two points ahead of Rayon Sport.

Fourth placed Police was held to 2-2 draw at Camp Kigali grounds by Amagaju in the other national football league played yesterday. 

Skipper Yves Twajamahoro and Jean Claude Bigirimana were on target for Police before the Gikongoro based club struck back with two late goals to head back home with a point.
