Police in Muhanga District have recovered nine ‘one-laptop per child’ computers and seven pairs of sportswear, which are part of assorted electronics and other scholastic materials which were stolen from Bwirika Primary School on Monday.

Thieves broke into the school computer laboratory and other offices and stole eleven laptops, a printer, four speakers and five mobile handsets.

They also left off with boxes of pens, 45 pairs of sportswear and balls.

Police spokesperson for the Southern Province, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, said that nine laptops were recovered from seven suspects, who have also been arrested.

"After thorough investigations, and subsequent information from the public on people they suspect to be behind the robbery, in the night of September 13, an operation was conducted in Nyamabuye and Shogwe sectors, where the seven suspects were arrested with some of the stolen items,” IP Kayigi said.

He said one of the suspects was caught with seven pairs of sportswear; another five laptops; while others were caught with one laptop each.

"All the suspects are currently detained at Nyamabuye Police station as investigations to recover other missing items and arrest anyone connected to this robbery continue,” Kayigi said.

"These computers and other scholastic materials are meant to facilitate Rwandan children develop their knowledge and skills, and to be competent future adults. We appeal to anyone with information to facilitate investigations, to come forward with information to ensure that everyone connected to this theft is brought to justice, and other still missing items are recovered.”
