C. Niyonshuti lost D. Mugabe 3-6 4-6
RWANDA’S junior top seed Cekina Niyonshuti was shown the exit in the second round of the third leg of the U-18 ITF/East Africa junior circuit on Tuesday in Nairobi, Kenya.
Niyonshuti who was the country’s lone hope lost 3-6 4-6 to Uganda’s leading junior player Duncan Mugabe.
Mugabe, winner of the ITF/East Africa junior circuit in Kampala easily eliminated Niyonshuti before pulling out of the tournament.
Mugabe who has now risen to 944 in the men’s senior ATP rankings was hit by a bout of malaria which saw his Egyptian opponent Karim Kadry qualify for the quarter-final without any third round hard task.
Niyonshuti followed Gisele Umumararungu in the exit chamber, leaving Rwanda to rely on Fidawusi Kiza and Mathew Uwizeyimana who were in action by press time.
Umumararungu became the first Rwandan to be knocked out of the third leg after losing to Egypt’s Nadia Fernandez 3-6 2-6.
