RWANDA’S Felix Ntirenganya posted his best performance of the season by winning the Bujumbura international marathon over the weekend in Burundi.
Ntirenganya from Police athletics club clocked 2 hours, 45 minutes and 5 seconds, over a distance of 42 kilometers.
Ugandan Daniel Chepyegon came second in a time of 2:45:20.
In the women’s category, Kenyan Emilie Cheptuya came first in 3:01:30, followed by compatriot Genifer Titiana and Rwandan Mediatrice Nyirarangwa in third (3:55:11).
In the half marathon (21km), Rwanda dominated proceedings. Slyvain Rukundo clocked 1:04:35 in first position while Jean Baptista Simuceka was second in a time of 1:05:10.
The Beijing Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame clocked 1:20:40 to win in the ladies’ category.
Italy-based professional runner Angelline Nyiransabimana finished third in 1:22:10.
The races were flagged off by the Burundi leader Pierre Nkurunziza accompanied by his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni.
The peace marathon race attracted 3,000 local and foreign athletes. The race was an invitation to all the Burundians, particularly the young people, to foster reconciliation, solidarity and peace.
