Police in Burera District are holding a man identified as Jean Bosco Ngayaboshya in connection with trafficking illicit drugs, assaulting residents and attempted bribery. Police spokesperson for the northern region, Inspector of Police Innocent Gasasira, said that the arrest of Ngayaboshya, who has eluded several arrests before, came after he also assaulted some residents he accused of reporting his criminal dealings to police.
"Ngayaboshya and his accomplices still at large, attacked and assaulted some residents in Bwerere Sector at about10 pm, accusing them of collaborating with the Police to arrest them,” IP Gasasira. "Fortunate enough, the victims managed to identify the perpetrators including Ngayaboshya, they information security personnel on patrol, who arrested Ngayaboshya as he attempted to flee. Investigations to locate and arrest his accomplices are still underway,” he added. "However, on arrival at Rusarabuye police station, he attempted to offer a bribe of Rwf398,000 to unlawfully force his release, which is also a crime that will be included in his criminal report that will be forwarded to prosecution,” the spokesperson said. "The public have a duty to make their communities safe, and assaulting them for doing the right thing is like attacking security organs. Worse still, offering a bribe will also add up to your criminal file,” he warned. Trafficking drugs attracts a term of imprisonment of up to five years; attempted bribery carries a sentence of up to seven years while assault is punishable with a jail term of two years under article 148 of the Penal Code.
