Rwanda U16 boys’ team finished sixth at this year’s FIBA U16 African Championships that concluded yesterday in Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius.
Moise Mutokambali’s side lost to Madagascar in the 5-6 classification game played on Saturday 74-80 at Phoenix Gymnasium. In the 2015 edition, Rwanda finished ninth.
Madagascar claimed the first quarter 17-15 before Rwanda took the second and third quarters 20-16 and 22-20 respectively but Madagascar won the fourth quarter 27-17.
Rwanda’s Thierry Nkudwa scored a game high 24 points, while team captain Elias Ngoga contributed 18 points. The two sides had met twice in Group A with each winning one game.
Rwanda lost the first game 87-95 but managed to bounce back in the return leg to win 73-70 but Madagascar went on to finish third and Rwanda fourth, both tied on eight points same as Algeria, who finished second, behind group leader and defending champions, Egypt.
Meanwhile, in the 7-8 place classification game, hosts Mauritius were thrashed by Mozambique 121-56.
By press time, Algeria and Tunisia were due to face off in the third-place classification game, while Mali and defending champions Egypt were due battle in the gold medal game.
