Rwanda teenage beach volleyball pair of Penelope Musabyimana and valentine Munezero made history on Friday storming the semi-finals of the ongoing sixth edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau Bahamas.

The quadrennial event started on July 19 and will run until July 23.

The pair along with tennis youngster Ernest Habiyambere are the only Rwandan representatives at the prestigious event that has attracted up to 1,300 athletes aged 14-18 from 70 nations and territories with making their debut appearance.

Led by coach Christopher Mudahunyuka, the pair of Musabyimana and Munezero have set a new record of becoming the first Rwandan team to reach the semi-finals and the only African team currently in the top four. The other countries in the semi-finals are Australia, New Zealand and Scotland.

They will lock horns with Australia at 6:50pm seeking to seal a historic final slot.

They have reached the semi-finals after winning three matches and lost only one.

In their opening game on Tuesday, they defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 (21-17, 21-16 and 15-13) before losing to New Zealand in the second game 2-0 (21-10, 21-19) but bounce back in the third game against Saint Lucia which they won 2-0 (21-15, 21-7) and sealed their semi-final slot stunning Vanuatu 2-0 (21-4, 21-14).

In the other semi-final, New Zealand will take on Scotland at 7:40pm.

Meanwhile in tennis, Habiyambere could not go beyond the second round after losing to Mathew Stubbings from Papua New Guinea 2-0 (6-2, 6-3).

In the first round, he had defeated Emmanuel Nyan Plange from Ghana 2-0 (7-6, 6-4).
