NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE — The Rwanda Revenue Authority has challenged districts to levy taxes on immovable property and strengthen their revenue collection mechanisms in order to widen their tax base.

The call was made during the Tax Advisory Council -TAC meeting that attracted all provincial, districts, and sector authorities from the Northern Province, in Musanze district on Thursday.

Ben Kagarama, the deputy commissioner in charge of domestic taxes, told participants the rural business community has the ability to pay taxes as long as proper policies are in place to collect the  members of the tax advisory council were advised to carry out mass sensitisation about the significance of taxes in national development, and why all tax payers should fulfil their tax obligations.

Tax payers, RRA officials said, need to be educated on national economic development policies and the possible business ventures they can undertake in regional blocs like the East African Community and COMESA.

It was also recommended that local leaders should lay clear strategies and gather information on potential tax payers and avenues to avoid tax evasion.

The Tax Advisory Council-TAC is a regional body which was formed in 2000. It helps RRA in sensitising tax payers on their tax obligations.
