2007 National Champion Rudy Cantanhede put up one of his trademark performances yesterday at Gikondo’s Industrial area to win day one of the Irushanwa-des 1000 collines rally.

The Belgian, making his first appearance on the local scene after a three-month break pinned Uganda’s Jas Mangat by one second to claim pole position ahead of today’s 445.74 km race in the eastern province. 

Arguably Rwanda’s best rally driver, Rudy navigated by his young brother Bruno Cantanhede in a Subaru Impreza did not only mesmerise hundreds of fans but also clocked the best time of two minutes and 46 seconds in the 3.13km circuit.

Mangat finished a second off the pace while little known Fitidis Christakis (Mitsubishi) rounded off the top three slots in two minutes and 48 seconds.

Valery Bukera in a Subaru clocked two minutes and 52 seconds to claim fourth place while new national champion Davite Giancarlo and Tony Saegerman tied in fifth spot with two minutes and 55 seconds.

Meanwhile, Claude Kwizera paid dearly for his reckless driving when he crashed his Peugeot after failing to negotiate a sharp corner. He is now ruled out of the race.

Tough race

"It was a tough race and the track itself would test any driver’s skills, especially in the corners,” a rather contended Saegerman said.

Today, the drivers head in the eastern province for what should be a cracking challenge on the fast tracks and sharp corners.
