As the end of the holy month of Ramadan comes to an end, it is our hope that those who upheld it came out with what they wanted; getting closer to God (Allah) and seeking forgiveness for their sins.

Many will have observed one of the pillars of Islam by giving to the poor who will have come to look towards Ramadan and the goodwill it comes with it.

Being pious and prayerful is what is expected in every religion, without exception. But it beats all logic when extremism overtakes faith.

Today many parts of the world are in turmoil fueled by Islamic extremism. ISIS has spread its tentacles beyond Iraq and Syria.

It proudly acknowledges terrorist attacks wherever they are perpetrated; the value of life has been turned into nothing. They are killing in the name of God.

That scourge has not spared our continent. West and North Africa are reeling under the threats of Al Quaida in the Maghreb and Boku Haram.

Al Shabab has shaken up things in East Africa. What has been most astounding is that radicalization has been taking place in places of worship, by respected religious leaders.

Rwanda should count its blessings that our security forces have been vigilant enough to stamp out the first signs of radicalization.

But that would not have been possible without the help it received and continues to receive from the country’s Islamic leadership.

Their teachings mirror the true teachings of Islam that should be the guiding principles of the faith.

Let us wish the Muslim brotherhood to continue this peaceful path as we continue to build our country.
