Around 80 golfers will swing into action when the 2017 Genocide memorial golf tournament tees off on Saturday morning at the Kigali Golf Club in Nyarutarama, according to organisers.

This is the fourth edition of the annual tournament, which is organised by Kigali Golf Club in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Culture and Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The one-day event will attract only amateur players in both men and women categories. The mode of play will be Stableford for the handicapped players.

"The tournament will exclusively attract Kigali golf club members and we expect between 70-80 golfers to turn up,” said John Thairu, the golf club vice captain.

The tourney will feature four different groups; including the men handicap 0-9, 10-18, 19-28 and the seniors, which will comprise players over the age of 55 as well as the women’s category.

Among the golfers remembered include; Anselme Sakumi, Dr. Charles Munyangeyo and Gerard Bakaka.

The event comes one week after the inaugural Ubumwe Grande Hotel Monthly Mug golf tournament which took place last Saturday and was won by Thairu.
