Tigo Rwanda on Thursday provided community based insurance (Mutuelles de Sante) premiums to 665 vulnerable residents in Bugesera District.

This was part of the firm’s ongoing corporate social responsibility drive dubbed ‘The 100 Days of Love’.

The handover of the medical insurance cards took place at the Mareba Sector, Bugesera District.

This donation brings the total number of Mutuelles de Sante cards distributed by Tigo over the last year to 1,409, according to a statement from the telecom company.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Xavier Ntasoni thanked the company and said: "we will no longer get sick and stay bedridden at home. Our lives will be better and we shall be able to work and help build our country”.

Commenting on the gesture that cost Frw2 million, Tigo Rwanda Chief Executive Officer Philip Amoateng, said: "As a company working in Rwanda, we believe that it is our responsibility to take care of the most vulnerable among us and that is why we are very pleased to be able to ensure that over 650 vulnerable people now have access to health care”.

Speaking at the event, the Mayor of Bugesera District, Emmanuel Nsanzumuhire, said: "Mutuelles de Sante is a government programme that aims to better the lives of Rwandans. When you don’t have health insurance, getting treatment is very expensive. Ensuring that all our residents have health insurance is a goal for our district.

"With such good partners, we are confident that all of the residents of Bugesera District will eventually have health insurance.”
