Sixteen teams, including eight from outside Rwanda, will compete in this year’s regional edition of the Genocide Memorial basketball tournament that starts on Friday and runs until Sunday in Kigali.
The eight foreign teams will come from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo—they include three that will compete in the men’s category and three in the women’s category, while the other two will participate in the veterans’ fray.
The three in the men’s teams are; PJB Goma and Boundess from DR Congo and Dynamo basketball club from Burundi, while the women’s include; PJB Goma and Scandinavia from DR Congo and defending champions Berco Stars from Burndi.
The Veterans’ category has VC Bakolo and VC Goma, all from DR Congo, along with Rwanda’s Patriots and United Generation Basketball (UGB) Club.
The three visiting teams in the men category will join the top four teams from the local edition that concluded last week – they include champions Espoir, Rwanda Energy Group (REG), IPRC-South and Patriots, who are also the regional defending champions.
The women category will comprise five teams, which include the visiting three and the top two from the local edition, namely; the champions APR and IPRC-South.
However, by press time, the organizers, Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) had not done the draws and fixtures of how the teams will play.
