Defending champions Police are looking to successfully defend their Genocide Memorial Handball Tournament title, which gets underway on Saturday and ends on Sunday.

This year’s edition has attracted a total 10 teams from Rwanda and Uganda. The two-day event will be played at three venues namely; Amahoro National Stadium, University of Rwanda’s College of Education, and Kimisagara.

The men’s category has attracted seven teams that have been drawn into two groups; A and B.

Group A, that will play its matches at Amahoro stadium, comprises Uganda Police Handball Club, Gicumbi-based Groupe Scolaire de La Salle, and defending champions Police (Rwanda).

Group B, that will play at University of Rwanda’s College of Education, has APR, Nyakabanda and Makerere University from Uganda, as well as Ngome from Tanzania.

The women category that, will also play their games from University of Rwanda’s College of Education ground, is composed of defending champions Gorillas from Rwanda, GS de La Salle and Uganda Police.

Last year, Rwanda Police defeated Uganda’s Evergreen in the final 32-20 to dethrone APR, who had won it the previous year.

"We are ready for the competition, we know each opponent because we have ever played them before, and our target is to successfully defend the title,” said Police head coach Antoine Ntabanganyimana.

In the men’s category, the top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals slated for Sunday at Kimisagara ground, while the women category will play on a round robin format and the winner of most games will be crowned champions.

The competition is organised every year by Rwanda Handball Federation (FERWAHAND) in memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
