RE: "America’s broken democracy” (The New Times, June 1).

I agree with everything Professor Sachs has written except for his conclusion. I do not believe the situation in the United States can be reversed. Logically, one must ask how the situation would change.

We must always remember that Trump was not appointed President; some 45 per cent of the people voted for him and still support him today. This also applies to the Congress. I doubt many of them will be voted out of office.

The US election system is riddled with corruption because of the large sums of money needed to run for office. If this is the root cause, then how does this change?

The US will continue down its corrupt path. I recently completed an article that shows that Rwanda and many other nations already equal or surpass the US on many economic measurements of freedom and stability of institutions. The demise of the US will open the field for other nations to show that another way of politics is possible.

All of this is sad except we must remember this is the path the people of America voted in power. It shows their collective vision and that speaks volumes as to the state of the nation.
