APR volleyball club head coach Sammy Mulinge says his team is ready to challenge for the title of the Genocide Memorial Tournament which is scheduled for June 3-4 in Kigali.

The former champions will be out to win the annual tournament, which they last won three years ago.

"I think this time we have to go for it, two years ago we finished second and last year we finished in third place, but hopefully, this year, we will do all we can to win it,” said Mulinge.

However, Mulinge is worried about the fitness of his key player, Yves Mutabazi, who injured his ankle while training with the national team which is preparing for the forthcoming Zone V Championships.

Matches will be played at different grounds across Kigali including; Amahoro Indoor Stadium, Kimisagara Youth Center, CoE, Ecole Belge, University of Rwanda College of Business and Economics (former SFB) and Premature.

Hosts Rwanda will be represented by Gisagara, IPRC-South, APR, Kirehe, University of Kibungo (UNIK), University of Tourism and Business (UTB), Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and Kigali Volleyball Club in the men’s category, while in women category, it will be Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), APR, St Aloys Rwamagana and Ruhango High School.

The annual event is held in honour of members of the volleyball fraternity, including players, coaches, and administrators as well as other Rwandans, who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

On top of the local club, organisers, Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB) expect other teams from Kenya, Uganda, Congo Brazzaville and Burundi.

FRVB has been organising the Genocide Memorial Tournament since 1995. University of Kibungo (UNIK) won last year’s men’s title after beating Sport-S in the final.
