It was, formally speaking, a 'multiparty' system, which we are incessantly told equates with democracy. In reality, despite the multiplicity of parties - almost all of which eventually experienced breakaway Hutu Power factions that coalesced with MRND and CDR as the spearhead of the Genocide against Rwanda's Tutsi.
The reality of multipartism being no bulwark against genocidal ideology and genocide execution os in and itself a testament to the shallowness of those who push the theology of outrageous multiparty political contestation as the ideal political system in all cases and circumstances.
We saw to our cost how those who push such ideas were nothing more than political pyromaniacs in our case; pyromaniacs who were nowhere to face the consequences with the people of Rwanda, when their prescriptions ended up in genocide.
Since that time Rwandans are rightly allergic to lectures from outsiders on how we should organize our politics and manage our politics.
We are determined to remain the masters of our own affairs and destiny and will never allow any third party to substitute their own preference for ours in this regard.
