Malawi has withdrawn its recognition of the ghostly Saharawi Arabic Democratic Republic "SADR,” Malawi’s foreign minister Francis Kasaila announced in Rabat.

"The Republic of Malawi has decided to withdraw its recognition of the SADR, which it recognized on March 6, 2014 and to maintain a neutral position visa-vis the regional Sahara conflict,” Kasaila said at a recent news briefing following a meeting with minister of foreign affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita.

Malawi supports the efforts of the United Nations, through the Secretary General and the Security Council, to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the dispute, he added.

"Our country wants to make a positive contribution to the UN process by maintaining a neutral position without pre-judging its outcome,” he said.

Malawi’s Foreign minister also expressed his wish that "this position of neutrality and support for the UN process will send a strong signal to all the parties concerned in favour of a solution to this long standing regional conflict.”
