As we commemorate the World Aids Day today, it continues to surprise me that to date, many people still do not know what this day implies.

I would like to share what I think of it and I hope it is helpful to other readers as well. To me, this day reminds us of the level at which this deadly epidemic has robbed us of our loved ones.

This has not only affected families but also the country. Many of those we have lost were a driving force to our country’s development, politically, socially and economically.

As people still living we should commit ourselves to prevent the spread of HIV.

In our society today, we already have thousands infected, most of whom are women. These contracted the virus because of mass rape that occurred during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis.

It is such a terrible reality. What we should do is to accept this situation and continue to provide for their medical needs.

The government should also increase facilities to support the big number of vulnerable children who lost their parents to the disease. 

Please remember Aids has no borders, anyone can contract the virus.

We should therefore avoid stigmatizing those who are already infected.

As we work towards stemming the virus. This calls for continuous mass sensitization campaigns on the preventive measures.

Together we can fight Aids.
