Debutants Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Basketball Club took a big step towards winning their first competitive title after defeating IPRC-South 64-55 on Sunday to dethrone Patriots at the summit of the league table.
REG took on IPRC-South just 48 hours after a crucial 78-68 win against reigning champions, Patriots on Friday night at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.
Following two back to back wins, REG went top of the league chart with 25 points, one ahead of Patriots in second and Espoir in the third place with 23 points. IPRC-Kigali defeated CSK 139-58 on Saturday to sit in fourth position with 20 points.
On Sunday, it was a Kami Kami Kabange and Benjamin Mukengerwa affair as the duo again stole the show against Charles Mushumba’s side, contributing a combined 34 points for Jean Bahufite’s team, who have only lost once this season, against Patriots in the first round.
REG won the first two quarters; 18-14 and 11-8 respectively while the hosts IPRC-South improved to claim the third quarter 14-12 before the visitors took the fourth quarter 19-23 hence wrapping up the game by a two-point margin; 64-55.
