Editor,
RE: "A tribute to Jean Sayinzoga” (The New Times, April 18).
Mzee Sayinzoga served the Rwanda Demoblisation and Reintegration Commission – the body in charge of ex-combatants –with the father’s love and care. Those of us who were privileged to serve under him immensely appreciate his service to the nation. He was humble, diligent, focused, humorous, incorruptible and tough.
RIP Mzee Jean Sayinzoga.

I came across a video interview in January this year in which Mzee Sayinzoga explained why government gives the ex-combatants Rwf60,000 as they integrate back into the community. He explained that it was to give them a sense of dignity, emphasising "they are Rwandans” and didn’t have to go begging relatives for sustenance.
The focus on dignity and on respecting the ex-combatants as, first and foremost Rwandans, is highly admirable. Many others would have focused on sidelining the ex-combatants but Mzee Sayinzoga got it right. It’s principally about dignity and successful integration into Rwandan society.
I wish Mzee Sayinzoga had time to write memoirs. Hopefully, someone else can write one about him. RIP Mzee Jean Sayinzoga! Thank you for your exemplary service to Rwanda.
