Table leaders Rayon Sports thrashed Amagaju 4-1 on Wednesday at Stade de Kigali to re-establish their eleven-point advantage at the top of the Azam Rwanda Premier League.
Moustapha Nsengimana netted in the 15th and 37th minutes before Kevin Muhire and Djabel Manishimwe added the other two goals in the 61st and 67th minutes, as the Blues continued to match towards an eighth league title.
Amagaju scored their consolation goal through Alanga Yenga in the 90+3 minute and remain 10th on the table with 25 points. Rayon Sports have 55 points, 11 ahead of second-placed and defending champions APR FC, who won for the time in four attempts in a 2-0 victory over Etincelles on Sunday.
In the 34th minute, Amagaju goalkeeper Gad Muhawenayo was taken off and rushed to hospital after colliding with Rayon Sports’ Fabrice Fikiri.
With eight league matches remaining, Rayon Sports, who have only lost once – against APR – this season, have now won 17 matches, five more wins than their archrivals have managed, drawing four.
APR FC, on 44 points, have a real fight on their hands to keep the second place as Police FC and AS Kigali are lurking just one point behind in third and fourth places, respectively.
Rayon Sports need 13 points from eight matches to win the league for the second time since the 2012/13 season while APR will need to win all their remaining games and hope that Djuma Masudi’s team collapse, something that looks increasingly unlikely.
Pipiniere FC, who have won just two times all season, are rock bottom with 12 points.
The league will take a two-week break as the country enters into the 23rd Genocide commemoration period tomorrow in remembrance of the over one million victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
