NGOMA — The Anglican Church of Rwanda (EAR) Kibungo Diocese has embarked on a campaign to stem corruption in the Ngoma district.

The campaign launched on November 6, to run up to December 6 2008, is being conducted jointly with the Ombudsman’s office and the Ngoma district- with the Church having earmarked over Rwf3 million for this effort.

The message is carried through sport for women and girls’ that include football, volleyball and basketball in all the 14 Sectors of the district.

The development is a response to investigations by the Ombudsman’s office, into corruption, heavily implicated the area cell and village leaders in the vice.

According to Fidele Hamilcan Tuyisenge, of Kibungo Diocese, the campaign is another way of showing their support to the government anti-corruption programmes and a response to the cases that were highlighted by the Ombudsman’s report.

"We found it important to fight against this vice which may affect the citizens’ lives most especially those living in villages,” Tuyisenge told The New Times. 

"Games in one way draw crowds and in this way we think we will deliver our messages to many people,” he added.

After every match, Tuyisenge said, discussions are held on the various ways of fighting corruption in the area, between the residents and officials from the Ombudsman’s office and the district.

He explained that they opted for women’s games because previously women have not been active in most government programmes including the fight against corruption.

The winner in each  field of the game will walk away with Rwf150, 000 cash prize with the second and the third taking Rwf110, 000 and Rfw65, 000 respectively.
