The newly elected president of National Paralympic Committee (NPC-Rwanda) Jean-Baptiste Murema has vowed to qualify the national sitting volleyball teams (men and women) to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. This goal will be top on his agenda in his four-year term in office.

Murema was elected unopposed during the General Assembly that was held at Amahoro national stadium with 44 votes out of 45 casted for the presidency position. He replaced Celestin Nzeyimana who has been holding the office since 2012.

Murema who is still the national men’s sitting volleyball team player has vowed to do all it takes to qualify the national sitting volleyball teams in both categories to the next major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities (Paralympic Games) that will be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.

"I have to say that great work has been done by the outgoing committee and we have to consolidate that great effort in progress, my objective is to thoroughly develop sports for disabled people but on top of it all, I together with the new committee will do whatever is possible to qualify for Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in both categories and we are going to lay strategies for it soon,” said Murema

Last year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rwanda became the first African country to compete at the paralympics in the women sitting volleyball category, four years after the men’s team also debuted at the 2012 London Paralympics.
