The General Assembly of delegates of RPF Inkotanyi in Kigali, on Sunday, elected Pascal Nyamulinda as the party chairperson, replacing Monique Mukaruliza.

Nyamurinda is the City of Kigali mayor, just like his predecessor before she was appointed High Commissioner to Zambia, a position that hinders her continued leadership of the party in Kigali.

At the assembly held at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC Kigali) in Kicukiro District, Nyamurinda scooped 468 votes out of 495, while his challenger, Phocas Musemakweri, got only 27 votes.

Following his election, Nyamulinda pledged to continue strengthening party structures within the city right from the grassroots by building on the achievements registered under his predecessor.

He also said he would strive to improve service delivery, planting of trees on all the hills around the city and bring order within Kigali, especially by ensuring that business operators transact in designated areas.

"I will also champion the efforts to have in place a centralised sewerage system and boost general hygiene in Kigali,” he said.

Meanwhile, members said a lot more needs to be done to ensure all households in Kigali adopt the use of cooking gas in the effort to safeguard the environment.

They also called for the reinforcement of human resource at the cell level, saying there are many employees at the sector level, yet most services have been decentralised to the cells.

The meeting agreed that strategies should be drawn to engage university graduates in different communities in the preparation and consulted regularly during the execution of performance contracts (Imihigo) within local governments.

The meeting also tackled the problem of drug abuse, especially among the youth, and called for the involvement of all community members to fight the vice by reporting those within communities that distribute and consume them.
